MORE NEWS ON OGUN STATE HEALTH SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT
CAPACITY BUILDING
During year 2004, The HSDP phase II concentrated on capacity building of the existing core of Health Professionals in the state in order to meet healthcare delivery needs. Emphasis was laid on areas to review and formulate the health sector reform to improve quality of Healthcare delivery, Health Management Information System, Public Health and Healthcare administration. Top health management officers were sponsored on overseas training while over a hundred health administrative staff of the Ministry benefited from further training. A number of equipments have been purchased, in line with the World Bank guidelines and is used to enhance the delivery of healthcare in the state.
HEALTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES
As part of the State Health Sector Reform, the project now provides support for the inauguration of Health Management Committees in all the Public Health facilities under the States Hospital Management Board. This is part of the decentralization process undertaken by the Ministry towards making the hospitals autonomous and self - sustaining. A committee was selected consisting of the Head of the Hospital, Head of Nursing and Pharmacy Departments. The committee’s interest in the development of the hospital has resulted in significant progress for the hospital.
OTHER AREAS AND DEPARTMENTS
These include the ministry’s ideas on capacity building such as accreditation of private hospitals.
Accreditation of Private hospitals: In order to monitor the standard of clinical practice by private medical care service providers, the state has taken action on private hospital accreditation to delineate the registered and approved ones from those that are not. The project got no objection from the World Bank to provide initial take -off fund for the production of signboards that will be distributed to the approved private hospitals.
Support for Eradication of Polio: The project sponsored radio jingles and the production of a documentary on Poliomyelitis following the report of occurrence of some cases of Poliomyelitis in three LGAs of the state. This was done in order to create awareness and to control the spread of the diseases.
Pharmaceuticals services Department:
- Celebration of 2004 United Nations anti-drugs campaigns in collaboration with Gateway front Foundation on June 29 with an Open Air Campaign at Kuto motor park Abeokuta, Ijebu- Ode and Yewa zone. Essay competition for secondary school students.
- Continuous pre- approval inspection of pharmaceuticals companies and patent medicines stores in different parts of the state with collaboration with private sector pharmaceutical inspectors.
