EDUCATION Back to top
Opening the Doors of Educational opportunity.

Education is the key to our nation’s future. We must ensure that Nigerian children have the tools
Child doing home workto succeed academically. As a Member of Senate, I will fight, as I have as commissioner of health, for the resources that are so badly needed in our nations schools. I will FIGHT to ensure that our universities are well equipped with the right infrastructure and resources. My agenda aims to ensure that academic excellence is restored in our primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. An ideal of our Government has always been to provide the highest quality public education to our nation’s children. I want to add my voice to the chorus of Senators who are fighting to make that a reality.

I believe that, to fulfil Nigeria’s potential, we must return to building a world-class education system and ensure opportunity for all children. We need to focus on giving students and teachers the resources they need to succeed. The state must help our communities and families by ensuring that resources are used effectively through the elimination of bureaucracy and moving money into the classroom. We must also invest in early childhood education, where we can make a great difference for long-term educational success. Our economy and our society also demand that we ensure that the opportunities that education brings are affordable to all citizens.

Roadmap to Progress

As your next Senator, these are the educational reforms I will be taking to the Nigerian Senate.

  • Increase Accountability and Make sure our Government invests in our Education System.

I will ensure that more money goes into the classroom and not into bureaucracy and paperwork. Education must be accessible to our families, and I will work with the education ministry to address funding issues.

  • New Schools are built and existing schools maintained.

I will raise my voice to ensure that new schools are built and existing schools upgraded to provide our students with adequate learning facilities. If we build new schools, we will in the process, produce first class citizens who will build our nation.

  • Recruit and Retain the Best Teachers.

I will drive for a mass recruitment campaign to bring in the best teachers and also to retain teachers and education staff. This will be done via teacher mentoring programs and staff incentive programs.

  • Run a literacy awareness campaign

Families need to be aware that the prosperity of their generation is linked to the education of their children. I aim to see an increase in the enrolment rate of children in the rural community.

HEALTHCARE

Building a healthy Nation
We live in the greatest country in Africa. Yet we have sick children whose families can't afford to take them to a doctor. There are women who find out they have breast cancer in the late stages because they could not afford a mammogram and do not know what Cancer is. And we still have our citizens dying needlessly because we do not have the right infrastructure to support our medical personnel. I believe this is unacceptable. This is the time to make healthcare for all Nigerians a reality regardless of income.

The right to LIVE should not be considered a luxury for anyone - but quality, affordable care remains out of reach for far too many Nigerians. Medicine globally has moved dramatically toward treating and curing many illnesses through pharmacology and advances in technology. Our Public policy, however, still has not done enough to keep pace with these advances. I am committed to improving our health care system and directly addressing the challenges associated with providing healthcare for all.

I believe access to health care should be a right – not a privilege. That’s why I am going to the Nigerian Senate with a forward-looking plan that will make significant strides to provide quality and affordable health care to all families at the state level. I believe that as long as citizens are forced to choose between medicine and food; as long as our families are dying and suffering due to a basic lack of care, I have a responsibility to do better. We need real leadership that will work for more affordable, quality health care not only for hard-working families, but also, for those who are unable to afford health care. I have done it as commissioner of Health and intend to build on this when I go to the Nigerian Senate.

Roadmap to Progress

As a Senator for Ogun State I will:

  • Expand Access to Health Care for Children Most In Need and the vulnerable

I will work to ensure that our children and the vulnerable have access to health care by working to maximise our potential coverage.

  • Address our Nursing Shortage.

I will address our nursing shortage and help improve quality by creating incentives to recruit and retain the best nurses.  An Incentive could be awarding scholarships to students who agree to work as nurses for at least four years after graduating from college.

  • Reform Medical Reporting to Reduce Medical Errors, Lower Costs and Save Lives.

I will work to improve the quality of health care and hold down costs by reducing medical errors in the treatment of patients, improving training of medical providers, increasing the use of information technology and ensure that accurate data / statistics are available.

  • Reduce Disparities in Minority Health Care. I will actively work to reduce disparities in minority health care, including increasing funding for community health centres and promoting programs that target conditions that disproportionately affect minority communities such as Polio and HIV/AIDS.
  • Increase Access to Care in Rural Communities. I will dedicate more state resources to increasing access to care for rural communities, including programs that place nurses and providers in underserved communities.

Women and Youth Empowerment Back to top

Empowering People, Building our Nation

Iyabo giving a speech
Every individual has a desire to live fulfilled lives. I believe that we need to empower, engage and create value so that both women and men can contribute to the economic, social and cultural advancement of their families and communities and to their own personal fulfilment. Women are empowered when they operate within a stable environment of equality, peace and democracy. Everyone needs to have access to knowledge, information and a positive value system.

Roadmap to progress
  • Provide training for Youths in various vocational disciplines
  • Established micro credit & Enterprise development Programme for women.
  • Information Technology & Business developments at grassroots level.
  • Introducing ICT at village levels.
  • Develop an agenda in consultation with various key stakeholders that provides a blue print for youth development
  • Promote positive role models for young people and champion youth mentoring schemes. This will create a sense of responsibility and self-esteem.
